Cleansing bar vs soap — which is this?
A hybrid, and the ingredient order tells you. True soap is made by saponifying oils with alkali, and sodium palmate is that. But coco betaine, a synthetic surfactant, comes first. So this cleans mostly like a cleansing bar and partly like a soap, which is why it sits at a gentler place than either alone.
Is it a non soap cleanser?
Not strictly, and we would rather say so. A genuine non-soap cleanser contains no saponified fatty acids at all. Sodium palmate is fifth here, so there is real soap in the bar. If you need a properly soap-free wash for a medical reason, this is not it.
Why does it have no active ingredients?
Because that is what it is for. Every other bar in our range is trying to change your tone. This one is designed to clean and get out of the way, which makes it the right choice alongside a strong leave-on treatment, or on its own when your skin needs a break.
Is it fragrance free?
No. Fragrance is listed on the ingredient list, near the end. If you are looking for a genuinely fragrance-free bar we do not currently make one, and that is worth knowing before you order rather than after the parcel arrives.
Can I use it after a reaction to something else?
It is the most sensible bar in our range for that, because there is nothing active in it. Stop the product that caused the problem, wash with this, moisturise plainly, and add nothing new for a week. Sensitive skin routines covers the rest of the approach.
How does it compare to the other bars?
The Beauty Soap is the active one with free kojic acid, and it can sting. The Gold Plus bar is gentle but sold on glutathione. This one has nothing in it at all. If you want a bar to do tone work, this is not the bar. If you want a wash, it is the best one here.
Can I use it on my body and hair?
Body, yes, freely. Hair, no — betaine is used in shampoos, but a bar with sodium palmate in it will leave hair rough and dull, and hard water makes that worse. Use it from the neck down and something else above.
How long does a bar last?
Six to eight weeks with facial use once or twice daily, and around four weeks with full-body use. Keeping it dry between washes makes more difference than anything else — a bar left sitting in standing water will not see out a month.
