Beauty bar vs soap — is there a real difference?
Yes. A true soap is made by saponifying oils with alkali, which is what this is: sodium palmate and sodium oleate are the giveaway. A beauty bar is usually a synthetic detergent bar built around milder surfactants at a lower pH. Soap cleans harder; a syndet bar is gentler on a compromised barrier.
Why has my bar turned brown?
Free kojic acid oxidises when exposed to air, light and water, and the colour shift is the visible sign of it. The bar is still safe to use, but it is losing potency. Buy one at a time rather than stocking up, and keep it out of a sunlit bathroom.
Should I buy this or the Fairness Soap?
This bar if your skin is robust and you want the more direct form of kojic acid. The Fairness Soap if you are sensitive, because its dipalmitate ester is gentler and more stable. They are not two grades of the same thing — they are two different trade-offs.
Can I use it on my body?
Yes, and a 100gm bar goes a long way on arms, underarms and knees. Body skin is thicker and generally tolerates it better than the face. Avoid broken skin and freshly shaved areas, where free kojic acid will sting noticeably.
How long does one bar last?
About six to eight weeks with once-daily facial use, less if you use it on the body too. Kept dry it holds up well; left sitting in water it will soften and disappear in half that time. Storage makes more difference than frequency here.
Will it dry my skin out?
It can. SLS plus a true soap base puts this at the stronger end of cleansing, and the glycerin, panthenol and mineral oil only partly offset that. Tightness within a minute of rinsing means drop to alternate days. Tightness that persists means switch products.
Is it safe to use around the eyes?
Keep it away from the eye area entirely. The skin there is thin, kojic acid stings on contact, and SLS in the eye is genuinely unpleasant. Wash the rest of the face with the lather and use something plain around the eyes, or simply rinse that area with water alone.
Can I use it alongside a brightening cream?
Yes, and that is the sensible pairing. The bar handles cleansing and leaves a little active behind; the cream does the sustained work. Do not add a third kojic acid product on top — the point of diminishing returns arrives well before the point of irritation.
