A foot scrub does its best work on skin that has already been softened. Ten minutes in warm water first, then light pressure — that order changes the result far more than any grain ever will.

Description

A foot scrub used with force makes the problem worse, because callus is skin protecting itself from repeated pressure. The same is true of a hand exfoliating scrub on dry knuckles: less force, more often, and always on skin that has been softened first.

Benefits

  • Softening does most of the work: Ten minutes in warm water before an exfoliating foot scrub lifts more dead skin than twice the scrubbing.
  • It seals as it scrubs: The base is petroleum jelly and beeswax, so a film stays behind once the grains rinse away.
  • A foot scrub for soft feet: and for hands too. Knuckles, palms and heels build the same thickened layer, for the same reason.
  • Lighter-looking heels come from removal: Taking off a pigmented dead layer is what you actually see. Nothing here changes how much melanin your skin makes.
  • Twice a week is plenty: More often and the skin rebuilds faster, which is precisely the opposite of what you were trying to buy.

Ingredients

This is a cream you happen to scrub with, rather than a salt scrub. Most of the list is there to leave something behind on the skin after the grains have gone.

Petroleum Jelly, Beeswax and Hexadecane — The occlusive part. They stay on the skin through the rinse, which is why heels feel softer immediately.

Sorbitol — The only water-holding ingredient in an otherwise greasy base. It keeps the paste from drying out in the tub.

Octadecanoic Acid — Stearic acid under its chemical name. It thickens the paste so the grains stay evenly spread rather than sinking.

Grains — The list names the abrasive only as ‘grains’, with no material stated. Patch test before using it on thin skin.

What this will not do: it will not clear a thick callus, and it will not close a cracked heel. Deep callus needs a file used on dry skin, and cracks need a urea cream or a podiatrist, neither of which is in this tub. Several entries below are supplier trade names rather than recognised ingredient names, so we cannot tell you what they are.

Full ingredient list: DM Water, Tetra Acetic Acid, Croda, Octadecanoic Acid, Bees Wax, Hexadecane, Petroleum Jelly, Sorbitol, Farmoline, GZA, Propylene Glycol, Titanium Dioxide, Zione, Grains, Fragrance.

How To Use

  1. Soak hands or feet in warm water for about ten minutes first. This is the step that matters.
  2. Pat off the surface water, leaving the skin damp rather than wet.
  3. Take a small amount and work it in small circles with light pressure, letting the grains do the work.
  4. Spend longer on heels and knuckles, and skip anything cracked, cut or sore.
  5. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.
  6. Apply a cream or lotion straight afterwards — the Yusma lotion for the rest of you works well here — then socks or cotton gloves overnight if you can.
  7. Twice a week is the ceiling. Once a week is enough for hands.

FAQs

How to use foot scrub on heels that have gone hard?

Soak first for ten minutes, then scrub gently, then moisturise and cover. The soak is not optional — hard skin is difficult to remove dry and easy to remove once it has taken up water. Repeat twice a week and you will get further than one long, hard session ever gets you.

What makes the best foot scrub for hard heels?

A base that stays behind after rinsing, an abrasive fine enough not to scratch, and a size you will keep using. Grit alone is not the answer: a scrub that removes dead skin and leaves nothing occlusive behind lets the heel dry out and thicken again within days. It is worth comparing everything else in scrubs before you choose.

Why does the hard skin come back so quickly?

Callus is a response, not a defect. Skin thickens where it is repeatedly pressed or rubbed, so as long as you walk, stand or carry, it will rebuild. Scrubbing harder speeds that up rather than slowing it down. Regular light removal plus daily moisturising keeps it manageable, and our thicker jar for elbows and knees handles the moisturising half.

Is it too rough for the backs of my hands?

The backs of the hands are thinner than palms or heels, so go lighter and less often — once a week, with barely any pressure. If the skin looks pink afterwards you used too much force.

Will it lighten dark knuckles and dark heels?

Partly, and by a mechanism worth understanding. Thickened dead skin holds old pigment and scatters light, so removing it makes those areas look lighter straight away. That is a real result, but it is removal rather than a change in melanin, so it needs repeating rather than finishing. Dry, rough skin darkens this way all over the body, not only on hands and feet.

Should I use it before or after a shower?

During, at the end. A shower softens the skin the same way a soak does, so scrub in the last few minutes rather than at the start. If you are doing feet properly, a basin of warm water while you sit beats standing in a shower, because you can reach the heel. The full Yusma range follows the same order: soften, treat, seal.

What should I do about a heel that has cracked?

Stop scrubbing that area. A crack is an open wound, and abrasive on it will hurt and can let bacteria in. Keep it moisturised with something thick, cover it overnight, and see a pharmacist about a urea-based cream, and come back to the scrub once the skin has closed.

Can I use it if I have diabetes or numbness in my feet?

Ask your doctor first. Reduced sensation means you cannot feel how hard you are pressing or notice a small injury, and foot injuries in diabetes are treated seriously for good reason. Professional foot care is the right route rather than any home scrub.
