What is face wash, and how is it different from a bar of soap?

A face wash cleans with manufactured detergents; a true soap cleans with fatty acid salts made from oil and lye. The practical difference is pH — soap is alkaline and cannot be adjusted, a wash can be. That said, this particular wash sits on the alkaline side too, which is unusual for the format.

How to use face wash without over-cleansing?
