Eighteen ingredients, and the fourth one decides the character of the whole bottle.

Alcohol Denat. — Fourth on the list. It carries everything else in fast and evaporates, which is the whole non-greasy effect and the whole trade-off.

Tapioca Starch — A mattifier. It absorbs surface oil and leaves a dry, powdery finish, which is why the lotion never feels like a lotion.

C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate — A light ester oil. It does the softening an oil would do, without the weight or the shine an oil brings.

Dimethicone — In a leave-on it fills the microscopic gaps in dry skin, which is why rough patches look smoother before they actually are.

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder — Dried and reconstituted aloe. Concentrated by weight, but still a small share of a formula that is mostly water.

The honest limit is the alcohol. On normal or oily skin it is exactly right. On genuinely dry skin — winter hands, shins, anywhere that cracks — something that evaporates is the wrong tool, and one of our petrolatum-based lotions will hold water far better. The carton also promises moisture for over twenty-four hours. Nothing in this formula supports that figure, so we are not repeating it.

1. Apply to clean, dry skin. This one does not need a damp surface to work on.
2. Two pumps for face and neck. A palmful for arms and legs.
3. It should absorb in under a minute. If it has not, you used too much.
4. Good straight after shaving, once any nick has closed over.
5. Twice a day if you like. It is light enough that it will not build up.
6. If your skin feels tight an hour later, this is the wrong lotion for you.

Is alcohol in a moisturiser bad?

It depends entirely on your skin. Denatured alcohol thins the formula, speeds absorption and evaporates, which is why this feels weightless. On oily or normal skin that is a genuine advantage. On dry or eczema-prone skin it can leave you tighter than before. The ingredient is not villainous; it is just wrong for some people.

Can I use it on my face and my body?

Yes, and that is unusual for a 400ml bottle. Most body lotions are too heavy for facial skin because they lean on petrolatum and wax. This one has neither, so it sits fine under a beard or after a shave. Two pumps for the face, a palmful for limbs.

Does it work as an aftershave balm?

Reasonably well, with one caution. It absorbs fast and the silicone smooths razor drag, which is what you want. But alcohol on freshly shaved skin can sting, and on an open nick it will sting a lot. Wait until the skin has closed, then apply.

Will it help with dry, cracked hands in winter?

Not enough. Cracked skin needs something that stays on the surface and holds water in, and this formula is designed to do the opposite. Use one of our petrolatum-based lotions on hands and keep this one for face, arms and anywhere that is not actually splitting.

How is it different from the other Face Fresh lotions?

Completely. Every other lotion in the range is built on petrolatum, mineral oil and wax, and carries niacinamide. This one has none of those. It is a modern lightweight emulsion — alcohol, starch, silicone and an ester oil — and it is the only bottle we sell that behaves this way.

Why is there no brightening ingredient in it?

Because it was formulated as a moisturiser and nothing else. That is a reasonable decision. A tone ingredient in a body lotion is on your skin all day, which is good, but it also has to survive the formula and be present in a meaningful amount. Here they simply left it out rather than adding a token.

Is the fragrance strong?

It is noticeable and it fades within an hour or so. Fragrance is last on the list, which means a small amount, but a fragranced lotion applied over a whole body is still a lot of perfume. If you wear cologne, apply this well before, or keep it to your arms and legs.

Does it sit well under sunscreen?

Yes, better than most. Because it absorbs completely and leaves no film, sunscreen goes on over it without pilling or sliding. Give it a full minute to sink in first. That is one of the practical advantages of a lotion with no wax in it.
